Digitalization in manufacturing is not a new topic. Many medium-sized companies have already gained experience with Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). Almost all companies are already working with ERP systems, which digitally represent all processes in the company. In addition, there are now big data and platform technologies.

But it is also a fact that some medium-sized companies lack the financial resources to consistently implement Industry 4.0. Many of the companies are family businesses that feel committed to their employees and are afraid of losing jobs. At the same time, we are observing an increasing shortage of skilled workers, a trend that is playing into the hands of digitization.

velocity

Practice shows that the pace of digitization in industry varies greatly. Roughly speaking, I see large companies pushing ahead, developing a digitization strategy and consistently implementing it. This is where the transformation of work can be observed most clearly. Many medium-sized companies are selectively advancing digitization; the focus is on technological changes. Existing processes are usually maintained; changes in work rarely take place. In my opinion, valuable and important opportunities are missed.

quality

Work in industry will change — including and especially among SMEs. Companies that focus on digitization quickly and consistently need more highly qualified specialists. Machines and robots take on standardized tasks, jobs are lost. This is because previous employees are usually unable to carry out the tasks now required, despite all qualifications and continuing education. In addition, there is new potential for conflict with employees when introducing assistance systems, which are intended to reduce sources of error and/or increase work speed. Keyword here: the “transparent employee.”

Depending on the industry and product, digitization and automation can also lead to a decline in the intermediate level of qualification. In addition to highly qualified tasks, these companies have almost only simple routine activities that are paid so cheaply that potential automation potential does not have to be fully exploited.

Man — machine

The Bermuda triangle of digitization and automation is between the poles of people, technology and organization. External consulting can help medium-sized companies develop ideas for sustainable solutions and a consistent implementation strategy together with all parties involved.

It applies, among other things,

  • to change organizational and management structures, from greater agility to complete redesign,
  • Experiential knowledge to obtain
  • to introduce new forms of project work,
  • to promote new competencies, responsibilities and soft skills (e.g. improving resilience in the event of stress) through continuing education,
  • Where applicable, one or the other to specialized companies Outsource.
